Electrochemically Stable In Situ Dilatometry of NMC, NCA and Graphite Electrodes for Lithium-Ion Cells Compared to XRD Measurements

Virtually all types of electrodes used in lithium-ion batteries expand and contract during cycling, which poses an engineering design challenge. Information provided by X-ray diffraction (XRD) about alterations the crystal structure active materials may be insufficient to inform these tasks. This is because it unclear how evolutions translate into measurable thickness changes at electrode or cell level. In this study we investigate cycling using a dilatometry setup compare them XRD-measured from scientific literature. Both reliability dilation measurement electrochemical performance are thoroughly validated significantly exceed those related studies that have been published recent years. Various laboratory-made graphites as well LiNi 1/3 Co Mn O 2 (NMC111), 0.6 0.2 (NMC622), 0.8 0.1 (NMC811) 0.15 Al 0.05 (NCA) positive Kokam SLPB356495 pouch investigated. The results show expansion does not necessarily correlate with unit volume its any meaningful way thus only measuring full can fully understand predict behavior cycling.
